James was referred to AV-DC by Solitaire Volvo in Adelaide. While the factory Volvo XC70 sound system has a slick interface, James was looking for more volume, more dynamics, and more detailed treble to really enjoy his music on his work commute. He also needed to maintain full use of the boot, including Volvo’s factory option canvas liner.
James came to AV-DC’s showroom to audition our range of speakers, and after some discussion and listening decided on Morel’s Tempo Ultra speaker system, and a JL Audio TW3 10 inch subwoofer. A Mosconi D2 80.6 DSP amplifier completes the system, interfacing to the factory sound system’s outputs, and powering the Morel front speakers, factory rear speakers, and subwoofer, all with advanced computer control. (You can read more about the D2 DSP Amplifiers here.)
While it’s a simple system on the surface, careful integration is what brought the best out of the equipment. We constructed a bespoke molded fibreglass enclosure to situate the subwoofer on the factory trim panel in the boot, and custom mounts for the front bass speakers. (The subwoofer has a steel grille to protect it in everyday use.) The Mosconi D2 amplifier mounts via a bracket to factory mounting points under the subwoofer. If the car ever needed to return to standard, no modifications are permanent.
With careful tuning, the end result is a sound system with huge presence, bass depth and kick, and mid and treble clarity and detail. When the wick is wound up, it’s an unassuming system that ‘goes all the way to eleven!’
